Session Notes...
Sessions at the Auld Dubliner have been a little more cozy
lately-
back to the front room. It's very magical when the musical
conversation crystallizes in a set of tunes. One of the
things that really propels those moments is when the playing
and listening coincide. Even the most experienced musicians
often make it a point to take a few turns sitting out to
listen to their fellow musicians, whether it's to pick up a
new tune or to listen to how someone who plays the same
instrument approaches melody, variations or rhythm. It also
helps prevent some of the musical confusion that happens
when there are multiple versions or settings of tunes,
different chord progressions or conflicting rhythms from
guitars, bodhrans or other accompanying instruments all
happening at the same time.
If you have suggestions or tips for improving the session,
please send them to me. We'll be adding a news section to
the session website soon with pointers for creating a great
session.... S.G.
